Difficulty: Intermediate

3. Contemporary portraiture

Intention:
Casual portraiture using a natural background and coloured backlighting

Model position.
3-6 feet/1-2 m from background to prevent coloured light spilling on model and to allow
enough distance for the wall to fall out of depth of field.
Method and metering
Lighting background with two studio flash fitted with two different colored gel filters on
opposite sides.
Left, gel holder
Right gel holder with honeycomb to direct light
Main light, round sunsoft diffuser pointed down, for a round catch light.
Below and left gold reflector to soften shadow under eyes nose and chin and to give a
warm light.
Camera position can be anywhere in a 45° arc in front of model.

Metering process:
Incidental at models eyes.
Meter main light f4.0
Meter coloured gel lights f4.0

Light meter settings:
Incidental, ISO 100, 1/125, f4.0 (or you preferred setting)
Camera setting:
ISO 100, 1/125, f4.0 (or your preferred setting)

Camera and light meter setting must match.

Shutter and f stop can differ this must the reflected in your metering.
