7. Heart Shadows

Intention:
It would probably be fair to say that I have a fascination with light and shadows and have done for many years, so I am always looking for different ways to use them, whilst this isn’t exactly ground breaking or totally original; it probably is a little different.
This has been done in some form or other with an open book, usually with a ring or wedding band used to cast a heart shaped shadow, I wanted to try something a bit different and with a solid shadow, like it or not, this is the result.

Setup and process.
The intention was relatively simple, to cast a solid round shadow on the legs of a model using the curvature of her legs to form the shadow as a heart, the setup is a little more tricky, unlike using a ring placed on the legs the apple has to be dropped and the camera and flash fired at the precise moment to place the shadow correctly. This took several attempts to get how I wanted; the apple was dropped from just outside the camera view.
As illustrated there were three lights, a snoot as key light @ f8 to cast a hard shadow to form the heart, a softbox as first fill with a grid from the left for soft directional light to add a little contrast, at one stop below the snoot f5.6, and the third light with a softbox to fill shadowing to the right, this was two stops below the snoot f4.
The model was laid flat in the floor, each light was approximately three feet above and pointing downward, the camera was tripod mounted, pre-focused and fired remotely.
